Summerland park access open to vehicles once again

Giant's Head Mountain Park road had been closed to motor vehicles since June 30

The access road in Giant’s Head Mountain Park in Summerland is open to vehicle traffic once again.

Because of the decreased fire hazard rating in the region, the municipality has reopened the road to vehicle traffic effective Sept. 22.

The road will open at noon and close at 9 p.m. each day except Sundays.

The Summerland Fire Department thanks the public for their cooperation in complying during the temporary road closure.

The road had been closed on June 30 because of dry conditions and the extreme fire danger rating.

“This closure is in effect to protect public safety and to ensure that emergency equipment and personnel have unobstructed access to the park in the event of an emergency,” fire chief Glenn Noble said at the time.

The road had been closed earlier, including in the summer of 2017 and the summer of 2018, because of the fire danger rating. In addition, it was closed in the spring of 2020 and partially closed in the spring of 2021 to slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.
