Summerland RCMP notice crimes of opportunity

Summerland RCMP are describing thefts from a Trout Creek property as “crimes of opportunity.”

Cpl. Chris Richardson of the Summerland RCMP detachment said there was a lot of scrap material on the abandon yard where the thefts occurred.

He said the thefts could have been prevented if the materials had not been left out in the open.

Richardson urges people to keep their homes and vehicles secured and to keep valuables out of sight.

“We’re still seeing people leaving wallets in their cars,” he said.

Thieves will break windows if they see an opportunity to take a wallet, loose change or credit cards.

Despite the thefts in the community, Richardson said Summerland continues to enjoy a low crime rate.

“Our town as a whole is still a very safe town,” he said. He added the the crime rate has not increased in recent years.
