After receiving permission from the municipality of North Cowichan, the folks with Surfrider Vancouver Island are teaming up with neighbours to clean up the beach at Maple Bay.

The clean up event is slated for Aug. 20 from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Surfrider member and volunteer Kristi Woodall said gloves, bags and buckets will be provided but people are needed to do the work.

“The vision is to keep our beaches open to everyone, promote smart coastal development that avoids coastal impacts, protect special ocean and coastal places before they are threatened, ensure the water is clean to surf and swim and the beaches are free of plastic litter,” she said.

The Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit environmental group whose aim is to protect and enjoy the world’s oceans and beaches.

“Surfrider started in the waves in Malibu, California that were threatened by development and pollution,” Woodall explained. “Since 2006, Surfrider’s focus is 100 per cent on our ocean, waves and beaches. We care for the area where the land meets the sea, with one foot in the sand and another in the water. And Surfrider enjoys very much what we are protecting.”
