A 52-year-old man is in custody after he was nabbed by staff at a Surrey car dealership for allegedly trying to boost one of their vehicles on the weekend.

Just before 6 p.m. Saturday, a vehicle was taken from the Applewood Kia dealership lot in the 16200-block of Fraser Highway.

Shortly after, the vehicle was driven back onto the lot. The driver then revved the engine and drove over a 1.3 meter drop and onto a parked vehicle at a restaurant.

The driver, the only person in the car, took off on foot. Staff from the dealership gave chase and apprehended the man a short distance later.

They held him until police arrived.

No one else was injured in the accident, and drugs and alcohol have been ruled out as contributing factors in the accident.

Kevin Douglas Pickering, of no fixed address, is being charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle, theft over $5,000 and driving while prohibited.
