A Surrey man faces several charges following a traffic stop in Burnaby.
Nineteen-year-old Jaskaran Johal has been charged after he was allegedly caught in possession of a prohibited substance after breaching his conditions and allegedly attempting to flee from police, according to a release from the combined forces special enforcement unit of B.C.
During a traffic stop in Burnaby on March 21, police say they noticed Johal was not displaying an “N” as per requirements for a class 7 driver.
As officers were getting out of their vehicle to conduct the traffic stop, Johal allegedly sped off.
Officers were able to relocate the vehicle, and “immediately arrested the driver for alleged flight and dangerous operation,” police said.
Police say they then detected an “extremely strong smell of marijuana” coming from inside the vehicle, and searched it.
There they say they found a baggie of marijuana, three cell phones, and a marijuana grinder.
Police say they also found another baggie of marijuana and what is believed to be cocaine nearby the vehicle.
Johal is now facing multiple charges, including one count of operating a motor vehicle pursued by a peace officer, dangerous driving, and one count of possession of a controlled substance.
