Surrey Now-Leader reporter wins silver for environmental writing

Tom Zytaruk received a provincial journalism award for series on illegal dumping

Surrey Now-Leader reporter Tom Zytaruk has won a silver environmental writing award for his 2017 three-part series on illegal dumping in Surrey, entitled Trashed.

“The experience of this reporter makes the difference between a basic community story on trash and an excellent piece of journalism,” the judges commented. “It digs deep in all the right areas, puts the focus on people and offers solutions.”

Zytaruk received the silver Thompson Rivers University – Journalism, Communication & New Media Environmental Writing Award at the provincial Ma Murray Community Newspaper Awards in Richmond on Saturday.
