SURREY — Police investigating what was believed to be the 44th local shooting in five months, overnight, instead found a man suffering from stab wounds.
It happened in Port Kells just after midnight, near 184th Street and 92ndAvenue. Police were called to the area after receiving reports of shots fired.
“Surrey RCMP are clarifying that a shots fire report from overnight has not been unsubstantiated,†Surrey RCMP Staff Sgt. Dale Carr said at 9:30 a.m. Monday. “The injuries to the male have been determined to be consistent with being stabbed rather than being shot.â€
Police have yet to identify suspects.
Staff Sgt. Joe Johal issued a news release at 5:09 a.m. saying that the victim, whose name and age has not been released, is being treated in hospital.
“At this time this incident does not appear to be a random act, but rather targeted at this young man,†Johal said.
Meanwhile, a Surrey pedestrian was struck down by a car in the Newton early Saturday morning, in the 10600-block of King George Boulevard. Police responding to a 911 call at 2:50 a.m. found the 22-year-old man with multiple injuries, lying on the road.
“The driver is cooperating fully with police,†Staff Sgt. Murray Hedderson said. “It appears that the victim pedestrian was on the median and stepped off of the median without looking, or noticing the vehicle, and was struck by the Toyota Corolla.
“Speed and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in this collision,†Hedderson said. “The pedestrian that was struck was transported to hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.â€
Police are also investigating a fatal collision between a motorcycle and a car that happened at the intersection of 8th Avenue and 172nd Street in South Surrey at about 9 p.m. Saturday.
It involved a 2003 Saturn driven by a North Vancouver resident. The 32-year-old Langley driver of the motorcycle and the 22-year-old Surrey woman riding with him were thrown from the bike. The man died at the scene and an air ambulance took the woman to hospital, where she is in serious condition.
“Speed and alcohol do not appear to be contributing factors in this collision,†Hedderson said.
