SURREY — Surrey Mounties have arrested a man accused of assaulting a Delta Police officer.
Sharlene Brooks, public affairs coordinator for the Delta Police, said the Delta cop was doing a street check on the man in 8600-block of Scott Road at about 9 p.m. this past Saturday.
She said he was “initially cooperative” until he learned there was a warrant for his arrest in Surrey. Brooks said he took off, the Delta officer chased him, they got into a “physical altercation” and the man escaped, leaving the officer with injuries to his face and shoulder.
“Although injured, the officer gave chase on foot but due to his injuries was unable to continue,” Brooks said.
The RCMP, police dogs and a police helicopter searched for the fugitive but didn’t find him. Meantime, the Delta officer was taken by ambulance by hospital where he was treated for his injuries and released the next morning.
By Wednesday, the Surrey RCMP had arrested the suspect, on an outstanding warrant not related to the Delta Police incident, at 1:40 a.m. in the 9100-block of King George Boulevard and he appeared in court later that day.
Jessie Nolan, 34, of Surrey is charged with assault police officer causing bodily harm and obstructing a police officer.
“The Delta Police officer remains off duty while he recovers from his injuries,” Brooks said.
