Suspect in custody after allegedly assaulting Mission police officer

Police say man ran away, barricaded himself in his home

A 36-year-old man is now in custody after an early morning altercation with a Mission RCMP officer.

On Tuesday (April 17) morning, at about 7 a.m. Mission RCMP responded to the 13000 block of Cardinal Street after a pick-up truck was reported to be in a ditch.

According to police, they approached the driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle. The driver allegedly pushed one of the police officers and threatened to strike them with a shovel.

Attempts to apprehend the driver were unsuccessful and the suspect subsequently fled to his nearby residence and barricaded himself inside.

The police made contact with the suspect inside the home and after about an hour, were able to arrest him without incident. No one was seriously hurt in this exchange.

The male, who was known to police prior to this incident, is currently in custody. He has been charged with assault with a weapon and assault of a peace officer.
