A Sunday evening dispute involving two teenage girls in Polson Park ended with one girl being stabbed and the other being sought by RCMP.
Vernon officers were called to an area in the park at around 8:15 p.m. after reports of a woman being stabbed.
“Witnesses told police there had been a verbal argument between the two women and that one produced a knife and stabbed the other,” said Vernon RCMP spokesperson Gord Molendyk.
The 16-year-old victim was taken to Vernon Jubilee Hospital in serious condition, suffering from two stab wounds to her back and stomach. She reportedly lost a great deal of blood at the scene.
The suspect is believed to be a 15-year-old girl who fled the park and was last seen running westbound across Highway 97.
“Our officers are continuing with this investigation in an attempt to locate the suspect,” said Molendyk Monday morning. “We have an idea who she is. These two were known to each other, and at one point they were girlfriends.”
The knife used in the incident has not been recovered.
The victim was rushed to hospital and underwent surgery Sunday evening. Police had hoped to speak to her on Monday to learn what the dispute was over.
Molendyk called the incident “troubling.”
“It is really troubling that it comes to this, two people this age feeling they need to settle an argument with a knife,” he said. “And one person ends up being stabbed.”
