Surrey RCMP confirmed that a bomb scare at Surrey Memorial Hospital Saturday afternoon was a hoax.
Police responded to a report of a patient hiding something inside Surrey Memorial Hospital at approximately 11:58 a.m., Feb. 5.
Officers located a suspicious looking object inside a hospital bathroom. The object appeared to be a possible improvised explosive device, police said.
Surrey RCMP’s Explosive Disposal Unit attended the scene and evacuated the Care and Treatment Zone of the hospital for four hours.
The Lower Mainland Integrated Police Dog Service also attended and conducted a sweep of the surrounding area.
Police moved the device to an off-site location where it was determined that the object did not have explosive capabilities.
“Incidents like this have a significant impact on the hospital staff and patients,” said Cpl. Vanessa Munn. “We greatly appreciate the cooperation of those who were working or attending SMH on Saturday.”
RCMP said a possible suspect has been identified and police are actively looking to speak with that person.
