It took Mounties more than three hours to capture a suspected car thief near Silvermere Lake Wednesday afternoon.

The manhunt began around 2:45 p.m. when a Mission police officer ran a routine check on an older Honda Odyssey van with a damaged windshield in the area of Dewdney Trunk Road and Ferndale Avenue.

The vehicle was reported stolen from Richmond earlier in the day, said Mission RCMP Sgt. Shaun Wright.

Police attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled westbound. The suspect abandoned the vehicle on Hayward Street where there was ongoing BC Hydro construction, and continued to elude police on foot.

Police set up a containment area and conducted an extensive search between the Ruskin Dam and Lougheed Highway with nearly a dozen officers from the Mission RCMP detachment, along with a police helicopter and two dog teams.

The suspect was spotted around 4:45 p.m. and taken into custody without incident.

The 24-year-old male resident of Richmond will be facing several charges, including possession of stolen property and flight from police, said Wright.
