The Nanaimo RCMP is asking the public for help to find the rightful owner of a mountain bike believed to have been stolen.
The bike was seized from an individual at about 3:15 p.m. July 9 near Uplands Drive and Hammond Bay Road, according to an RCMP press release. The officers involved were patrolling when they came across a person well-known to them who was riding the bike without a helmet.
The 35-year-old male suspect was evasive with his answers and “quite confrontational” when questioned, so the officers came to the conclusion that the bike was most likely stolen.
“Despite the barrage of profanities spewed at them, some of which the officers had never heard before, the bike was seized in the public interest,” the press release noted.
The bike is a blue Norco Fluid FS3 with a large frame. The officers obtained the serial number for the bike and called numerous bike shops in the city, but had no success identifying the owner.
“If this bike had been registered at Project 529, it would have been returned to the rightful owner by now,” said Const. Gary O’Brien, Nanaimo RCMP spokesman, in a press release. “It only takes five minutes of your time to register your bike, and it’s time well spent.”

Anyone with information about the ownership of the bike is asked to call the Nanaimo RCMP non-emergency line at 250-754-2345 and quote file No. 2021-25338.
