A Hedley man received a suspended sentence in Princeton court Thursday, after pleading guilty to uttering death threats.

Shane Allison will be under conditions for 12 months, and received congratulations from Judge Greg Koturbash for recently completing rehab and getting a job.

In her submission to the court, defense attorney Kathryn Lundman pointed out there were extenuating circumstances in the case.

“The victim admitted to shooting [at Allison and a friend] with a pellet gun, which is really a dumb move on his part.”

Court heard that on September 4, 2017 Allison and a friend threatened to kill a man in Hedley, who had identified himself as the person who shot at their car when they were doing burnouts.

Crown Attorney Andrew Vandersluys shared parts of a victim impact statement. The man who was threatened described himself as feeling “paranoid…He suffers fears and they are always on his mind.”

While Allison has a criminal record that includes break and enter, assault causing bodily harm and mischief, Vandersluys noted the positive nature of his pre-sentencing report.

“Mr. Allison is of aboriginal heritage. He has attended [a treatment centre] successfully and there appears to be a marked shift in his attitude.”

After placing conditions on Allison – which include a weapons exemption for hunting for sustenance – Koturbash wished Allison good luck.

“I’m glad to hear you are doing so well. That’s awesome,” he said.
