Suspicious fire destroys Vernon garage

Incident occurred Saturday night in the 100 block of Kalamalka Lake Road

Authorities are investigating another suspicious fire in Vernon.

Firefighters were called to a garage in the 100 block of Kalamalka Lake Road Saturday at about 10:46 p.m.

“The guys took care of it fairly quirky,” said Lawrie Skolrood, Vernon deputy fire chief.

The structure was destroyed by the fire.

“It was empty,” said Skolrood in terms of contents.

The RCMP and the fire department are investigating the fire, which is just the latest incident in Vernon.

On Oct. 20, a recycling dumpster was set ablaze at Interior Freight and Bottle Depot on 24th Avenue at about 9:30 p.m.

And on Oct. 16, firefighters were called to a three-storey building under construction in the 2700 block of 41st Avenue at about 9:48 p.m.

“There is no pattern per say that it’s one kind of fire,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson, when asked if the three incidents are linked.

Molendyk also wouldn’t speculate on the recent fires possibly being connected to a rash of suspicious fires during the summer.

“There is no way of knowing if they are related,” he said.

BX-Swan Lake firefighters were also called out to a suspicious fire in the Dixon Dam Road area Saturday night.

“There was a fully involved car fire on the side of the road when we arrived. We extinguished it quickly but it was totally destroyed,” said Bill Wacey, BX-Swan Lake fire chief.
