Swimming ponds at Castlegar’s Millennium Park temporarily closed

First closure of the year

The swimming ponds at Castlegar’s Millennium Park are temporarily closed, effective immediately.

The closure is due to above normal levels of E. coli at the ponds due to increased geese activity in and around the ponds, according to the City of Castlegar.

The city regularly tests the water quality at the ponds and submits the results to Interior Health for review.

This is the first time this year that water quality at the ponds did not meet Canadian Recreational Water Guidelines.

“We hate to close the natural ponds which have been very popular this spring and summer with the warm weather but public safety is our top priority,” says Castlegar’s parks foreman, Crystal Bazar. “Our team is working very hard on this issue with the goal of re-opening the ponds as soon as possible.”

The city expects the closure to remain in place until at least Aug. 13.
