The Syrian Refugee group of Fort St. James is well on their way to raising what’s needed in support of sponsoring a Syrian family in Fort St. James.
About $27,000 is required before the process can even begin.
To date, $10,334 has been raised including funds from the Ethnic Dinner and personal donations.
For fundraising coordinator, Terry Kerry, the dinner couldn’t have happened without all of the community support.
“It was the easiest fundraiser. Everyone just pulled together and did their part,” Kerry said.
Another fundraiser is already in the works. The community can look forward to a raffle with great prizes.
On April 15, the group will be taking part in sponsorship training provided by Mennonite Central Committee.
The training will include information about the sponsorship process, cultural and language, expectations and financial obligations.
“It’s an opportunity for everyone to ask their questions,” group member, Louise Evans-Salt, group,” said.
For anyone who would like to make a personal donation, they can do so at the Integris Credit Union in Fort St. James and cheques may be made payable to the Fort St James Syrian Refugee Sponsorship Group.
The next meeting will be held on April 20 at 7 p.m. at the Fort St. James Public Library.
