The TD Canada Trust Sooke branch held its open house on June 23, and gave a $5,000 donation to the Juan de Fuca Salmon Restoration Society.
York Langerfeld, Sooke TD Canada Trust branch manager, said the funds were allocated from the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.
Langerfeld said whenever a branch is opened, a donation is made to the community.
In order to determine a suitable recipient, employees, who are also local residents, were canvassed and the Juan de Fuca Salmon Restoration Society was elected as the donee.
“We wanted to make sure it stayed in the community because that’s why we’re here,” he said.
According to Ray Vowles, Juan de Fuca Salmon Restoration Society president, the funds will be used to purchase an underwater camera, create interpretative signs, and design different exhibits to show the value of salmon and water.
“(The donation) helps a great amount because it’s going to the educational part of it,” Vowles said, adding the association is very happy to receive the donation.
The Charters River Salmon Interpretative Centre, located off Sooke River Road, is expected to be in full operation this fall.
