A fire by Coalmine Road in Telkwa last week claimed a trailer and all its contents.

There was no one home at the time of the blaze and all the pets were outside when it sparked on Thursday afternoon.

It took about 12 firefighters from Telkwa and four from the Smithers department to put out the blaze.

Telkwa Fire chief Laurence Turney said crews were on scene for about 10 hours between overhaul and clean-up.

“Big thanks to Smithers and our gang for doing a good job, they were able to keep it from involving other trailers and buildings in the area,” he added. “There was some good work done.”

The cause of the fire is undetermined.

“It started in the middle of the trailer but we don’t know why or how,” Turney said.

The fire forced the closure of Coalmine Road at the railroad tracks and traffic backed up past Highway 16 for over an hour.

Bulkey Valley School District 54 superintendent Chris van der Mark said staff waited for parents at Telkwa Elementary School with buses unable to get through.
