Northwest regional Airport passenger numbers remained steady for the first half of this year despite the loss of non-stop flights from Terrace to Calgary.
The number of passengers from January to June 2016 is 105,980, only eight per cent lower than January to June 2015, which was 115,182.
That comes even though Air Canada cancelled its Terrace to Calgary nonstop service late in 2015 that had only been started in the spring of that year.
And WestJet cancelled its nonstop service from Terrace to Calgary this past March after introducing it in May 2015.
Westjet had begun the nonstop flight to Calgary in its hopes to partner with oil and gas companies, whose employees could then fly from Terrace directly to the head offices in Calgary.
It also hoped to capitalize on the LNG boom but cancelled the nonstop service after it didn’t see the passenger numbers it hoped to see.
So far this year has seen fewer flights missed due to weather or flights cancelled for other reasons.
January to June 2016 saw 29 fights missed due to weather and 11 cancelled for other reasons. January to June 2015 recorded 48 flights missed due to weather and 80 flights cancelled for other reasons.
