Terrace, BC school principal takes new job

Cameron MacKay is to be school district's human resources director

CAMERON MacKay, current principal at Caledonia Secondary School, is taking a new position with the school district.

Beginning Jan. 1 of next year he’ll be Coast Mountains School District’s director of human resources, according to a release posted on the district’s website Nov. 27.

“Cam assumed the role of principal at Caledonia in 2005, following many years of outstanding classroom teaching,” reads the release. “His broad experience base supervising teaching and support staff combined with his reputation as a team builder and a straight shooter will serve him well in his new role.”

MacKay, who holds a bachelor of education degree from the University of Victoria and a master of education degree from the University of Northern British Columbia in curriculum and instruction, is a “highly respected, long time educator in the school district,” reads the release.

He takes over from Balwinder Rai, who left the district this year.

MacKay is also known for his many years coaching the Caledonia boys basketball team.

Hiring is underway for MacKay’s replacement as principal at Caledonia, with the district expecting to announce that hire in December.

This is just one of a few new hires expected to be announced by the CMSD in the coming weeks and months. The position of director of instruction, currently held by Brent Speidel, is opening, with Speidel moving to a new position with North West Community College. The district is also seeking a new director of aboriginal instruction, and superintendent Nancy Wells’ replacement is expected to be announced in the new year, with her contract running out at the end of the 2013/2014 school year.
