THE RCMP have confirmed that one man is now in custody following the shooting death of another man and the wounding of a woman early yesterday afternoon.

The man was apprehended in the Kleanza Creek area early last night, ending a manhunt involving local RCMP officers and ones brought in from surrounding communities.

A RCMP helicopter was used and the area’s emergency response team was called out.

“RCMP are still gathering information to determine what happened and are speaking with witnesses. We are able to confirm that we have one male in custody and that the public is not at risk in relation to this incident,” said RCMP Constable Lesley Smith.

The shootings took place at a Dobbie St. residence in Thornhill.

The woman who was shot is now at Mills Memorial Hospital with what is described as a serious but non-life threatening wound.

She was able to leave the house where the shootings took place at approximately 1 pm yesterday, leading to authorities being alerted.

Smith said investigators from the Terrace RCMP detachment and the area’s major crime unit continue to speak with witnesses and want to speak with anyone who has information about the incident.

In the meantime, RCMP vehicles remain at the Dobbie St. residence as specialists examine the crime scene.
