A report on Summerland’s perpetual slide recommends the municipality should conduct quarterly data readings next year to gather additional information on the perpetual slide in the Canyon View area.
Summerland council received the report at its regular meeting on Monday evening.
The slide has been slowly moving for the past century and has been studied at multiple times in the past.
In 1977, a study of the area was included in a thesis report prepared by a Master of Science student from the University of British Columbia.
More recently, Golder Associated Ltd. prepared a report on the study in 2015.
The geotechnical and hydrogeological study showed the slide poses a potential risk to infrastructure, homes and public safety.
However, the study was not able to confirm whether borehole investigation has ever taken place in the slide area.
Borehole investigation was conducted in January to determine subsurface conditions, the depth of the slope failure surfaces and to acquire soil strength properties. While these readings provide some information, further testing has been recommended.
