Clippers are buzzing and scissors snipping again at That 50’s Barber Shop in downtown Nanaimo.
The shop was shut down for the day Wednesday after barber Dave Lawrence discovered the tools of his trade and many of his collectible items were stolen in an overnight break-and-enter at his barber shop on Victoria Crescent. That same day, people in Nanaimo responded with walk-in donations plus a GoFundMe donation drive that netted more than $7,500 in less than 24 hours.
“I got a lot of donations and was able to get more tools and got a security system,” Lawrence said. “It’s awesome. I was able to open today … the GoFundMe and people just dropping off money, it was amazing.”
So far there has been no word, Lawrence said, on any of his tools or collectibles being recovered, but he has purchased tools, sufficient to do his work, locally and he will order high-quality, professional-grade tools to replace those that were stolen.
“Right now I’ve just got the bare bones and then I’m going to look into getting nicer scissors and stuff that would replace what I had, but you have to order those in,” Lawrence said. “Right now this is fine.”
