There are many benefits when it comes to shopping local. Spending money where you live helps the entire community in ways shoppers and consumers may not even realize.
The trickle-down effect can help create more jobs in the area, support local sports teams, and benefit charities in the community that help residents in times of need.
“It’s very important not to forget that it’s the local small businesses that make the local young teams in sports, the ladies in the Auxiliary for the hospital and other fundraising societies to be constantly encouraged because the businesses they go to (for donations) give them a positive response,” said Harry Minci, who’s a director with the Clearwater Chamber of Commerce and owner of his own small business, Clearwater Gems and Gifts.
“Now if the business is not doing well, eventually they’ll not be able to give a positive response and that will also depress the situation of that team or society.”
Owners of online shopping websites or out of town businesses are also less likely to take part in such sponsorships and money spent with them will likely not end up in the local economy.
Shopping at a local business helps keep money in the community as owners often source materials, products and services from other nearby companies, which in turn helps them grow as well.
This can also lead to job creation because the busier a business is, the more staff that’s needed to operate and provide the goods and services they offer.
“Even for youngsters in school, (most small businesses) are always happy to be part of their success,” said Minci.
“Whether we do a scholarship, or make a donation, or any kind of support, we’ll be there, and I think for certain I speak for most retailers that they want to do the same or they’re already doing it and not many people are aware of it.”
So before going online to find that sought after item, or taking a trip out of town to go shopping, peruse the shops and establishments in your own town first to see if they have what you’re after — the benefits of spending your dollar locally could be felt across the entire community.
