The Sources Food Bank in Langley saw donations triple during this year’s Hunger Awareness Week donation drive, thanks to the generosity of the local community and the efforts of the local Church of Latter-Day Saints, which organized the Thanksgiving Food Drive in Langley City and Township.
The campaign to collected 19,000 lbs. of food, more than three times the 6,335 lbs. gathered by the same campaign in 2015.
“Each and every donation makes a tangible difference for the people who come to our food bank seeking help to feed themselves and their families,” said Sources CEO David Young. “The need is especially great as the weather turns colder.”
Sources Langley Food Bank, a member of Food Banks BC and Food Banks Canada is now in its second year of operation.
More than 600 residents in Aldergrove, Langley Township and City of Langley visit the food bank each week and the number is rising.
Hunger Awareness Week took place September 19 to 23.
Since it started in 2006, it has become Canada’s only campaign to raise awareness of the issue of hunger in Canada and the role of food banks.
In 2015, over 850,000 people were assisted each month by a food bank in Canada.
Of those helped, one in three were children.
