Third high-speed crash in Surrey over two days

SURREY — A car crash between two vehicles had two blocks cordoned off and swarming with police on Monday.

Just after 10 a.m. RCMP received calls of a Chevrolet Malibu speeding while travelling southbound on 140th Street. Shortly after, the vehicle hit a Pontiac Wave head-on that was driving northbound between 74th and 76th Avenues, which is close to Frank Hurt Secondary school.

Both drivers were taken to hospital with injuries. The driver of the Malibu, suspected to be speeding, reportedly sustained head injuries while the driver of the Wave sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

There were no fatalities in the accident.

RCMP is now investigating whether alcohol was a factor in the crash.

As of 2:15 p.m. Monday, 140th Street between 74th and 76th Avenues was still blocked off by police.

This is the third reported speed-related crash in Surrey since early Sunday morning.

Two separate car crashes took place over the weekend when vehicles failed to stop for police.

The first incident took place around 1 a.m. on Sunday morning when a silver Kia with a stolen license plate ran through a red light while attempting to flee police in Whalley.

The car was southbound on 132nd street when RCMP attempted to pull the vehicle over at 132nd Street and 104th Avenue. The vehicle did not stop, but hit another vehicle and lost control, went down the side of an embankment and rolled over, crashing near University Boulevard and 104th Avenue.

The driver fled on foot but was arrested five minutes later.

The second incident took place just after 9:30 p.m. on Sunday after an assault was reported to have happened at a restaurant near 72nd Avenue and King George Boulevard.

Four people related to the incident at the restaurant where “punches were thrown” fled the scene in a pick up truck. The truck fled from RCMP as police tried to pull the vehicle over, but rolled over at 135A Street and 68th Avenue.

All four people in the truck were detained and the driver was issued a number of motor vehicle tickets.

RCMP said the incidents are not related.
