The Fernie Hotel and Pub has released a public announcement that three of their kitchen staff are self-isolating due to potential exposure to COVID-19 outside of work.

“Due to a potential exposure to COVID-19 outside of their employment, three of our kitchen staff are self-isolating as a protective measure for our customers, staff and community,” said the announcement from The Fernie Hotel on their Facebook page on Jan. 13.

A spokesperson for Interior Health said to The Free Press that the potential exposure revealed by the Fernie Hotel and Pub had not yet resulted in a known outbreak in Fernie as of Jan. 13.

“No outbreak has been declared in the Fernie region,” they said.

“Interior can confirm that we are monitoring recent COVID-19 activity in the region. Any and all cases are self-isolating and Public Health is carrying out a thorough investigation of all close contacts. Interior Health will provide additional updates as required.”

The spokesperson sought to address any concerns within the community that visitors to Fernie’s ski hill were at risk of coming into contact with COVID-19. The Fernie Hotel is not located at Fernie Alpine Resort, but in downtown Fernie.

“The risk remains low for families and individuals visiting Fernie Alpine Resort who follow public health guidance.”

“The COVID-19 safety plan for the Resort does comply with public health requirements.”

Testing for those residents with symptoms is available by appointment at the Sparwood Health Center. Testing is not recommended for anyone without symptoms.

To book an appointment online, visit Interior Health’s website or call the COVID-19 Test Booking Line at 1-877-740-7747.
