Three Nelson organizations are being granted funds as part of nearly $6.5 million from the province for initiatives that help women escape violence.

Kootenay Boundary Community Services Co-operative, Nelson Violence Against Women in Relationships Committee, and Nelson Community Services Society were included in the announcement Friday by Public Safety Minister Mike Farnworth.

The money, which comes from civil and criminal forfeiture funding, is being spread out to 170 organizations across B.C.

Kootenay Boundary Community Services Co-operative will receive a $50,000 grant or the Safe Kids and Youth Co-ordinated Response, which helps young victims of physical and sexual abuse. The money will increase victim service worker hours in seven locations.

Another $30,000 goes to the Nelson Community Services Society for the Kootenay Domestic Violence Conference, which will train 150 service providers from across the region in domestic and sexual violence against women, with a focus on Indigenous women and girls.

Nelson Violence Against Women in Relationships Committee meanwhile gets $24,882 for a two-day workshop that focuses on developing a sustainable service model for trafficked persons.
