The downtown Thrifty Foods store in Courtenay will be relocating to the former Safeway location on Cliffe Avenue, a company official has confirmed. No firms dates have been set for the opening of the new grocery. Until that time, the England Avenue store will continue to operate.
“We’re just work-starting in the next couple of weeks to work on the space,” said Keri Scobie, Sobeys communications director for Western Canada. “At this point we’re thinking (of opening) by the end of the calendar year.”
Scobie says the new store will be “significantly larger” than the England Avenue location.
“It really allows us to have a bit of a different offering in terms of some of the services. It’ll be something probably similar to the size of the one that’s on Ryan Road.”
Sobeys Inc. owns about 1,500 stores in Canada under retail banners that include Safeway, IGA and Thrifty Foods.
Last November, Sobeys purchased the liquor store at the Westerly Hotel, with Thrifty Foods as the banner.
