TNRD advises residents to think about flood precautions

The Thompson-Nicola Regional District (TNRD) wants to remind area residents about high stream flows.

The TNRD says that although flooding is not expected on the larger rivers at this time, many smaller tributary streams will reach full bank conditions with average seasonal flows.

“Recent warm temperatures and rainfall falling on high elevation snowpack have generated high volumes of runoff in these streams,” said Ron Storie, TNRD Emergency Services supervisor. “Warm weather conditions are expected to continue for the next few days and, as a result, the water levels may stay the same or rise.”

Residents living in low lying areas are advised to be on the alert for high water flows and keep children and livestock away from unstable riverbanks.

They advise the public to also watch for debris flows that could damage pump intakes, culverts and bridges, and to use extreme caution or contact local authorities to remove plugged culverts.

They also note as  a reminder that cooler and faster flowing water exists for those who may be recreational boating in larger streams and rivers.

TNRD Emergency Services say residents requiring sandbags for flood protection of private property can obtain them during working hours by contacting:  the District of Barriere at 250-672-9751, or the District of Clearwater at 1-250-674-2257.

Should you notice flooding in your area, contact the Provincial Emergency Program 24 hour Emergency Coordination Centre at 1-800-663-3456.
