Birch Island residents returned 51 surveys to the TNRD, with 25 saying they wanted the train whistle stopped at the Birch Island crossing, and 26 saying they were in favour of allowing the train whistling to continue.

The Thompson- Nicola Regional District has tallied the results of a survey of Birch Island residents to gauge appetite to have train whistle blowing discontinued.

The majority of respondents said they wanted train whistling to continue.

Of the 51 completed surveys received, 25 said they wanted whistle blowing to stop, while 26 were in favour of allowing the train whistling to continue.

The survey, which was mailed out May 31, asked the respondents to check one of two boxes, one of which said, “Stop train whistling at Birch Island Mile 60.2,” and the other, “Continue train whistling at Birch Island Mile 60.2.”

The deadline to receive surveys was Thursday, July 14, at noon.

Surveys were mailed to residents within a 2,200-metre radius of the Birch Island Mile 60.2 controlled rail crossing.

Based on the result, the process to have train-whistle blowing stopped will not move forward.
