A two-year-old child was killed Friday after they were struck by a vehicle while walking with a woman through a grocery store parking lot in Squamish.

RCMP were called to reports the pair had been hit outside a store in the 1900-block of Garibaldi Way at about 6 p.m., according to a news release late Friday night.

Police believe the two people were struck while walking out of the grocery store and crossing the parking lot.

Both the woman and child were transported to hospital. The child later died of their injuries.

The condition of the woman is unknown at this time.

The driver of the vehicle involved remained on scene.

RCMP Sgt. Sascha Banks said investigators are now working to put together details of exactly what happened.

“We are a tight knit community and our thoughts are first and foremost with the family as well as those who were on scene, responded, and helped in any way they could,” Banks said.

The BC Coroners Service and RCMP Integrated Collision Analyst Reconstruction Service are also aiding in the investigation.

Anyone with information is asked to call Squamish RCMP.

Black Press Media has reached out to RCMP for updates on the condition of the woman.
