Toddler found dead in Victoria hotel identified

A 19-month-old toddler who was found dead in a Victoria hotel room last month has been identified.

Saam Zohrevand (also known as Saam Darya) was found at Hotel Zed on Douglas Street around 4 a.m. on July 18, according to the B.C. Coroners Service.

A preliminary autopsy indicates the toddler died of natural causes.

Microbiology findings showed that Saam had developed both a lung infection and a type of meningitis, both illnesses became severe over a short period of time.

The Victoria Police Department was originally called to the hotel for reports of a woman screaming. Saam was found with no vital signs and despite lengthy attempts at life-saving measures, was pronounced dead on scene.

The VicPD and the coroners service continue to investigate his death.

Saam’s family has been made aware of his death.
