Tommie Awards nominee thrilled

Vernon home builder says being nominated never gets old

While Keith Dahlen Construction has won 33 silver and eight gold Tommie Awards in the past, being nominated, in four awards categories this year, doesn’t ever feel routine.

Karen Dahlen, who runs the Vernon home renovation and builder firm with her husband Ken, said it still is fun to be included with what she calls other astounding real estate projects across the Okanagan Thompson region.

“It is always very humbling to go to the Tommie Awards ceremony and see so many beautiful projects up for awards,” said Dahlen.

“I think this kind of acknowledgment is important for our industry and is reflective to our clients as to the quality of work we can do.”

The Tommie Awards, sponsored by the Central Okanagan chapter of the Canadian Home Builders Association, will be handed out Jan. 27 at a formal gala hosted by The Delta Grand Conference Centre in Kelowna.

Kevin Santos, the 2018 Tommie Awards chair, said the success of the awards, started 26 years ago, is a credit to a strong and vibrant home building industry.

“It’s success is a testament to the hard work and efforts of the Canadian Home Builders Association that works tirelessly to promote and showcase world class projects and communities. These have made the Tommie Awards what they are today.”

Other Vernon area Tommie nominees include MQN Architecture & Interior Design, Predator Ridge and the Home Building Centre.

Dahlen Construction has remained largely focused on the Lumby to Armstrong corridor since the Dahlens took over the company from the founder namesake, Keith Dahlen, in the mid-1990s and moved to the North Okanagan from the Lower Mainland.

“We do the odd house outside of that. We did one in McKinley Landing recently and we are involved in a Kelowna project for a doctor who used to live in Vernon that we worked for in the past,” Dahlen said.

Dahlen credited the firm’s staff and the many trades people who work on their housing projects for its past Tommie Awards success.

“It is a team effort to complete a given project. And our clients play a role as well by allowing us to photograph their renovations or home interior features for consideration in these awards.”

She said the trophies are on display in the Dahlen Construction headquarters.

“It’s nice to be able to showcase what we have been able to achieve in our industry,” she said.
