Town adding charge stations

When electric vehicles start to poke their fenders onto the roads of Vancouver Island, their drivers will likely think of Qualicum Beach as a charging haven.

When electric vehicles start to poke their fenders onto the roads of Vancouver Island, their drivers will likely think of Qualicum Beach as a charging haven.

That’s because the municipality is preparing now for what many see as the way of the future.

Deputy planner Luke Sales said the town is planning and implementing the infrastructure to charge electric vehicles at several locations.

In the underground parking garage beneath town hall this week the service ws installed to power two charging stations, once they are purchased.

“The idea of charging something in the parking lot would be for town vehicles that we may consistently park in those spaces,” he said, “or perhaps we could open it up to the public so if someone is coming into town and they are a little short of charge, they can top it up.”

Although the plans are preliminary at this time, Sales said the town is leaning towards the middle range of charging station.

Sales said the town hall site will be the first of several the municipality is planning to install.

“This is the first location and we hoping to implement more,” he said.
