Town of Golden seeking input on Kicking Horse Dike name

With construction wrapping up, it's time to choose a name for the revitalized space

As construction on the Kicking Horse Dike project wraps up, the Town of Golden is seeking input from residents to help name the new riverfront space.

Residents can submit name suggestions and provide feedback on the project online at surveymonkey.com/r/TOGNamingContest from August 3-13 or join Town staff for a sneak peek along the dike on August 10 from 4 to 6 p.m.

“We really want to create a sense of place and identity for this area,” explained Chief Administrative Officer, Jon Wilsgard. “This project will transform the former dirt and gravel back alley into a vibrant space that will allow both locals and tourists to take advantage of Golden’s downtown riverfront area.”

In addition to protecting Golden from the risks of river flooding, the Kicking Horse River Dike Improvement Project will transform the riverfront space between Golden’s downtown and the Kicking Horse River, providing a multi-use lane and gathering space, along with dining and retail opportunities.

Throughout the project, communications and engagement has been a priority, keeping residents of Golden up-to-date on construction progress and allowing for opportunities to provide input into the design and vision for the area.

“In keeping with this trend, we wanted to engage residents to help name the riverfront space,” said Wilsgard. “We can’t wait to hear what the community comes up with!”

The official name will be announced as part of a grand opening celebration in September 2021.

The Kicking Horse River Dike Improvement Project is funded through The Federal Gas Tax Fund in British Columbia as administered by the Union of BC Municipalities, and represents the largest infrastructure grant the Town of Golden has ever received at $5.87 million. Over 65 per cent of this amount is allocated for this specific area with the rest of the funds used to heighten dikes elsewhere in the community over the last year. The beautification component, valued at approximately $1.2 million, is being funded through the Resort Municipality Initiative.

Construction on the third and final phase of the Kicking Horse River Dike Improvement Project started in April 2021. The project is set to be completed by the end of August 2021.
