Town of Golden stays fit in fall and winter

Town of Golden Recreational Services division is hard at work developing programs to help people stay active.

As the weather gets a little cooler, the Town of Golden Recreational Services division is hard at work developing programs to help people stay active. This year there will once again be a number of aquatic programs running with the support of the Town.

“Despite the fact the pool is closed we do keep some of our programs rolling,” said Manager of Recreational Services, Jordan Petrovics.

There will be number of different swimming lessons available for local youth between Oct. 16 and Nov. 15, on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The lessons will be held at the Sportsman Lodge, 1200 12 Street North, between 4 and 5 p.m.

Recreation Services Co-ordinator Kim Bryan explained the different levels will be Sea Turtle (24-36 months) *semi-parented, Sea Otter (3-5 years), Salamander (3-5 years), and Sunfish (3-6 years).

The cost of the lessons is $50 for local residents for 10 lessons.

“We are open for registration and folks can come into the town office to get registered,” Bryan said. She also added anyone from Area A can partake in the lessons for an extra $5 charge.

Aqua fit will also be back between October 9 and December 4,  on Tuesdays and Thursdays, at 5:30 p.m., at The Days Inn.

Aqua Fit is an exercise class for young, old, or in the middle.

“We will have a certified instructor leading the way with great selection of music,” Bryan said.

Bryan also spoke of the the five “magical properties” of water which help make Aqua Fit a great workout for many people.

She spoke about buoyancy; which decreases shock, making it a low impact workout; turbulence: currents in the water promote circulation, relaxation, and engage core muscles for stability; resistance: intensity of the exercise can be changed by increasing or decreasing surface area; hydrostatic pressure: heart rate is lowered without losing cardiovascular or aerobic training; and thermal conductivity: water “wicks” away excess heat creating a cool workout environment.

There are different options for payment which range from prepaying for all sessions or dropping by for a single day.

The Winter Walking Program is going to continue as well this year. The current plan is to start the program in mid-November. People will be able to walk indoors on Wednesdays and Fridays, times to be determined in the near future.

There will also be public programs held at the arena in Golden as well this year. There will be public skate programs starting soon. Monday night will see games of shinny (drop-in hockey) from 9:30 to 10:30 p.m. Public skates will be held on Wednesdays, from 7 to 8:15 p.m., and Saturdays, from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m.

“Part of the programs we have going, is to give people the ability for people to stay out and active. We also think it is great to partner with local hotels who have indoor facilities,” Petrovics said.

There will also be a parent and tot skate, and senior skate.
