The provincial government has given the gift of cash to help the Township of Spallumcheen celebrate its 120th birthday this year.
The Ministry of Community, Sport and Cultural Development is providing $75,000 to help Spallumcheen throw an elaborate birthday party.
“Spallumcheen has a lot to celebrate,” said Shuswap MLA George Abbott in making the contribution announcement.
“It’s been a beautiful, vibrant community for 120 years. This funding will help commemorate this anniversary with arts and culture events as beautiful and vibrant as Spallumcheen.”
According to a provincial press release, the funds must be used to incorporate arts and culture groups and local artists into the anniversary celebrations.
Spallumcheen Mayor Janice Brown said planning for the celebration will begin immediately.
“At our next meeting (May 7), we’ll start striking up a committee and hearing ideas,” said Brown, adding that the township is checking to see officially what the criteria is for spending the money.
“I’m sure people will come forward to participate or help out for the event. We want to use the money wisely, celebrate and make sure that everybody in Spallumcheen has a good time.”
No date for the celebration has been chosen.
Brown said the township’s actual birthday is during the third week in July, but the celebration will not be held then so as not to conflict with the Sturgis North Music Festival and Motorcyle Expo at the MotoPlex Speedway and Event Centre.
The province is providing $800,000 to help B.C. communities who are celebrating their 25th, 50th, 100th, 120th, or 150th anniversary in 2012 to incorporate arts and culture into their anniversary celebrations.
