Township wants improved lighting

Spallumcheen resident prompts politicians to request lighting at dangerous intersection, Highway 97 and Mendenhall Road

Spallumcheen council agrees with a letter from one of its residents asking for improved lighting on a section of Highway 97.

Ike Neutoun wrote council asking them to lobby the Ministry of Transportation for changes to be made at some poorly lit intersections in the township.

One in particular is the turn off the highway at Mendenhall Road.

“There is a turn lane for a left turn, when it snows this lane disappears and become the property of the oncoming traffic and you’re stuck in the traveled lane trying to make the left turn with everyone behind you hitting their brakes,” wrote Neutoun.

“Even in good weather, this intersection is dark and it is really tough to see where the turn onto Mendenhall Road is.”

Mayor Janice Brown said the goal has always been to have a left turn light off the highway at that intersection, and will bring up the topic in an upcoming meeting with highways representatives.

Coun. Christine Fraser made a motion, supported unanimously, that council ask the ministry of transportation to investigate installing a streetlight  or lighting at Mendenhall Road and Highway 97.

Hansen makes

brief stop

It will be a short stay in Spallumcheen for Rick Hansen during his upcoming 25th anniversary Man In Motion tour.

Hansen will arrive April 3 and will be at the township office from 12:05 p.m. to 12:11 p.m.

“It would be nice if we could get a bunch of residents out for those six minutes to welcome Rick Hansen and cheer him on,” said Mayor Janice Brown.

Hansen will be stopping at a number of North Okanagan communities during his upcoming relay.
