Four road projects have been pencilled in for Spallumcheen’s 2012 road capital plan, which will see the township spend nearly $1.5 million.
A 2.2-kilometre stretch of Salmon River Road, from the west boundary at Hullcar Road to the Okanagan Indian Band territory, will receive a full depth reclamation and overlay project at a cost of $785,000.
Reclamation, said Ed Forslund, public works manager, is spreading gravel on top of the existing asphalt, then bringing in a giant rototiller-like machine to spread the gravel into the asphalt and mix it together.
The formula is then regraded, packed and rolled, then paved over.
Overlay is adding more asphalt to the existing surface.
A section of Back Enderby Road, two kilometres south of Fortune Road, will also receive overlay and full depth reclamation at a cost of $350,000.
McLeery Road, at Highway 97A, to Rashdale Road will benefit from full depth reclamation at an estimated cost of $210,000.
And Stepping Stones Road will receive an overlay project for $120,000.
“We don’t know yet what the order will be as we’ll wait and see what happens with the tender process,” said Forslund, adding he hoped to have tenders out within two-to-three weeks.
Asked by Coun. Ed Hanoski if he thought one tender document was the best way to cover the projects, Forslund said absolutely.
“I think there’s much better pricing for larger quantities,” he said.
Council unanimously supported Forslund’s request to proceed with tendering the projects.
There is a possibility that the township will receive up to $250,000 to help with base reclamation and overlay road projects for this year as council will apply for a general strategic priority fund grant.
The township did the same thing in 2011 but did not receive any funding.
The 2013 capital expenditure of $1,865,000 was also unanimously approved.
