There is a big thank you out there to everyone who helped organize the very successful 5th Annual 2011 Thunder Alley Stomp’n Toy Run. This annual Barriere event was started by the vision of a young boy and his little red wagon, Nicky Grummett, who wanted to help the less fortunate families in his community. His life was sadly taken from an unfortunate motorbike accident, but his legacy is carried on today by Thunder Alley.
This event is held annually to support the Barriere Food Bank. In 2010 the Toy Run generated $2,476.85 in cash and cheque donations, 70 Christmas Hampers, and 3,966.23 pounds of food that was given out; which helped 100 adults, six seniors, 54 children, and three infants. Each child also received two toys and stocking stuffers, and all the adults and seniors received gifts as well. All of the donations collected each year (food, toys, etc.) stay in Barriere.
The 2011 event took place on Oct. 1, approximately 50 bikes rode through most of Barriere’s subdivisions, followed by a pickup truck collecting donations from area residents who wanted to support a worthy cause.
Organizers encourage more people to come come out and see for themselves how safe, well run, and enjoyable a day it is for everyone; you do not need a bike to participate.
They also note that the event would not be as successful if it was not for all the generous donations from residents and businesses, and the dedication of the driving force behind the event, Paul and Barb Morris. The Morris family opened up their home and property after the ride for a fun filled afternoon of family activities that welcomed the public free of charge; then in the evening a dance was held there which sold 190 tickets at $25 each.
Big thank yous were also given to the Barriere Fire Department and Barriere Lions Club for participating, and to the hard work of Paul and Barb Morris, Jack and Michelle Young, Sherry Ross, Ron Rotzetter, Randy and Gail Bugera, Ken and Marie Downing, and all those who’s names may not have been mentioned.
It was noted that there was no representative on hand from the District of Barriere in attendance at the Food Bank building for the arrival of the donations from the Toy Run, and organizers hope someone will be available for the 2012 event.
Totals received for this year’s Toy Run will be announced at a later date.
