Greater Vernon residents are getting closer to using a new sports amenity.

Contractors are moving ahead on final completion of most of the Greater Vernon Athletics Park, next to Okanagan College.

“There will be a soft opening at the end of July. We will set a date when we get closer to it,” said Keith Pinkoski, Regional District of North Okanagan parks and recreation manager.

Ocean Marker, a track surfacing contractor, has completed the high jump fan, the pole vault area and is now working on lanes seven, eight and nine. The final layer of track surfacing is also going down.

The bleacher footings are complete and installed and the bleacher structure is expected to arrive in mid-August.

“Landscape and irrigation is being worked on to ensure proper plant and grass germination,” said Pinkoski. “The building is now fully powered and the washroom amenities, sinks, toilets partitions are going in. The exterior work is currently underway with super panel concrete and aluminum-finish cladding.”

It’s still not known when teams will hit the turf.

“We hope to have football using it this year.”
