This fourth installment of Year in Review covers what was happening around Trail in the fourth month

April

2 – A crowd of over 200 people were on hand for the ribbon cutting to open the Trail Riverfront Centre. Ground broke on the $8.2-million facility in October, 2016.

4 – A crime spree in Fruitvale has landed four people in custody. Two men and two women from Alberta were arrested following a series of break-ins and a robbery, which involved stolen guns and cars.

5 – The Southeast Fire Centre said the 2017-18 winter delivered the fifth greatest amount of snow on record with a whopping 309cm measured at the Castlegar station.

6 – Trail Councillor Kevin Jolly announced that he’ll be resigning his post at the end of April due to a job change.

9 – With the Humboldt Broncos tragedy weighing on everyone’s minds, the city took time to honour the Trail Smoke Eaters’ thrilling playoff run while offering a moment of silence for those killed in the Saskatchewan bus crash.

10 – Teck’s Emergency Response team was in downtown Trail cleaning up a sulphuric acid leak from a Westcan truck. It would be the first of two incidents that would lead to much more chaos throughout the summer.

13 – East End regional directors continue to grapple with Trail’s request to improve the dilapidated main bus exchange shelter in downtown Trail.

19 – A rash of rural thefts have property owners locking down their possessions. Two ATVs were stolen recently from two different locations.

20 – A Columbia Basin report says the number of blue heron nesting spots are on the decline in the region.

25 – Trail Mayor Mike Martin announces he won’t be seeking re-election in the fall municipal elections.
