Whenever Honeymoon Bay residents look at their community hall, they’re prone to think of Merna Moffat.

This Friday, it’ll become a bit more official, with a tree outside the hall to be dedicated with a plaque in her honour, reading “She left the world a better place.”

The plaque, friend Dianne Coutts said, is quite fitting.

“Community service was a great part of her legacy, and I think her family and friends just want to recognize that, and say a last goodbye.”

The tree is quite large, Coutts said, and fittingly located outside the Honeymoon Bay Community Hall.

Moffat moved to Honeymoon Bay with her husband Wally in 1993, when she retired from her work as a medical technologist.

During her time in Honeymoon Bay, Moffat never stopped taking care of the community in whatever way she could.

From the welcome sign that greets people to Honeymoon Bay, the memorial trees, and a monthly community newsletter, Merna has left a lasting mark on the community.

The historical plaque on the Honeymoon Bay Community Hall is there as a result of Moffat’s efforts, and many locals credit her with having re-established the hall as a centre-piece of the community.

Moffat’s plaque will be installed at a ceremony beginning at 7 p.m., Friday, July 8, at the Honeymoon Bay Community Hall.
