Truck fire spreads to property in gated community

A loud bang rang out as flames spread to the grass

Investigators are looking to determine how a company truck caught fire in Okanagan Landing Tuesday, Dec. 10.

Reports came into Vernon Fire Rescue Services shortly before 2 p.m. that a truck was ablaze in a driveway on Melrose Court in Beverly Hills Estates, off Bench Row Road, after a machine in the bed of the work vehicle caught fire.

“Not sure exactly what the cause is at this point,” said acting Captain Michael Stoll. “There was no damage to the surrounding structures, just the vehicle involved.”

There was a loud bang from the truck approximately 30 minutes after firefighters had arrived on-scene and flames spread to the property.

“We believe two tires blew as well as perhaps the vehicle’s fuel tank. We got it under control,” Stoll said.

Firefighters quickly doused flames heading down the driveway and on to the neighbouring grass area.

The truck belongs to a North Okanagan based company who had two workers at the home doing an attic extraction, which is removing the insulation from the attic.

“My coworker came out to check on the machine and it was on fire,” said one of the workers who did not want to be identified. “We tried to put it out ourselves and we called the fire department.”

The truck was parked away from the unoccupied structure and there was little risk. The home was undamaged.
