Truck hits tree in Victoria’s Cook Street Village, traffic closed in both directions

Traffic rerouted for hours as city crews scramble to break down branches

A semi-truck hit a large tree at Cook and Sutlej streets in Cook Street Village this morning, shutting down traffic for hours and bringing out public works crews to clean up the mess.

The branches came down around 7:30 a.m. and thankfully there were no reported injuries, said VicPD Const. Mike Russell.

“The tree was hit by a large truck belonging to a contractor working on a City engineering project in the area,” said Katie Josephson, City of Victoria spokeswoman.

The 80-year-old chestnut tree was split by the impact and will need to be completely removed, Josephson said.

Drivers are asked to find alternative routes as B.C. Hydro and City crews continue to assess the area throughout the afternoon.
