Tulips will be springing up all around the city next spring after 700 tulip bulbs were recently planted to commemorate Canada’s 150 birthday in 2017.
Five hundred of those specially grown tulips from Holland were planted in front of city hall and the other 200 around the city.
Royal Canadian Legion Branch 13 member Ted Moss saw the Canada 150 website which lists information about the tulips and took it to the legion executive, who agreed to sponsor the project.
From the legion’s perspective, planting the tulips in front of the cenotaph an city hall is in respect of the 150th anniversary of Canada and is the best way to bring the tulips to the community, said Moss.
City gardener Eric Lennert planted the tulips and said they are expected to come up in April or May of next year.
Tulips have no trouble with our winters because the cold weather is part of the flower’s process to get them ready to grow and bloom, he said.
It gets just as cold in Holland, he added, where they lightly spray the tulips to form a thin ice barrier that insulates the flowers from the frost in the spring.
Lennert also planted some yellow daffodils with the tulips to break up the colour. A donation from Home Hardware helped with the project.
