The City of Courtenay is considering both a Single Use Plastics Regulation Bylaw as well as the adoption of an Urban Forest Strategy in the next couple of months. Public online survey opportunities are available for both initiatives.
Single Use Plastics Survey
Single use plastics generally refer to plastic products that are considered disposable and only used once before they are recycled, or more commonly thrown away. In addition, single use plastics such as bags, film and other packaging are often improperly recycled, adding costs to the program through increased time and effort required to properly sort materials.
The proposed bylaw would prevent businesses from offering single use plastic bags and straws within Courtenay. Separate surveys are available for residents and businesses, available at: www.courtenay.ca/plastics. Survey deadline is May 17.
Urban Forest Strategy Survey
An urban forest strategy is a planning tool that identifies opportunities and challenges for trees and forest stands on public and private land. Visioning and consultation occurred last summer. The public can now comment on the comprehensive draft plan which will be presented to council in June for adoption. To view the draft plan, background materials and to participate in the survey, visit www.courtenay.ca/urbanforest. Survey deadline is May 23.
