Two police officers hospitalized after being rammed by stolen truck in Surrey

Shots were fired by RCMP when suspects tried to flee scene outside Newton apartment complex.

Two Surrey RCMP officers were taken to hospital Friday afternoon after being rammed by a stolen truck.

The incident happened in the parking lot of the Cedar Tree Village apartment complex on Hall Road, just north of Newton Bingo Hall near King George Boulevard and 72 Avenue.

Surrey RCMP Insp. Bruce Stuart said at about 12:30 p.m., plain-clothes officers were attempting to arrest the driver and two occupants in a stolen vehicle.

“That vehicle tried to back up, to escape, ramming the police vehicles,” said Stuart.

The extent of the officers’ injuries are unknown, but were not believed to be life-threatening. One suspect was also taken to hospital.

Stuart said shots were fired by police during the incident but no one was struck.

A witness reported seeing several police cars and officers arrive on scene and a man being restrained.

Another woman in the apartment complex reported hearing RCMP officers yelling “shots fired, shots fired.”

Two men and one woman were taken into custody.

The investigation continues. The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) was notified but as of Friday afternoon, did not have conduct of the investigation.
